Op RESTORE – Veterans’ Physical Health and Wellbeing Service

Posted on:

At our practice, we refer eligible patients to Op RESTORE – a specialist NHS service for anyone who has served at least one day in HM Armed Forces and is living with ongoing physical health injuries or related medical issues linked to their time in service.

Op RESTORE takes a holistic approach, combining support from civilian and military consultants with welfare support from military charities to address both health and wider wellbeing needs.

Once we make a referral, the veteran will receive a text message inviting them to book a call with a member of the Op RESTORE team, who is also part of the Armed Forces community. During this call, they will discuss what the veteran hopes to achieve from the referral and identify any additional wellbeing needs. These may then be supported by the Op RESTORE Navigator or by Support Workers at Defence Medical Welfare Services (DMWS).

All cases are reviewed at a consultant-led multidisciplinary team meeting to confirm the best clinical pathway and next steps. Veterans are kept updated throughout, including receiving a text message with a copy of the outcome letter and the option of a follow-up call. Our practice also receives the outcome letter so we can stay involved in the patient’s care. The Op RESTORE team then continues to support the veteran throughout the rest of their clinical care.

While Op RESTORE cannot shorten NHS waiting times, it helps ensure that veterans’ health and wider wellbeing needs are recognised and addressed as effectively as possible.
