Travel Health

If you are planning or have booked a trip abroad and are seeking travel health advice, The Brow Medical Centre offers a travel clinic service with our travel specialist nurse Elena.

We would first ask you to complete a travel risk assessment form, so we can assess your risk, the recommended vaccines, any necessary malaria tablets (if you are travelling to a malarious region) and the advice most appropriate for your needs.

Once you have completed and returned this form to the practice, you will need to make an appointment with Elena. We regret that no traveller will be seen without a completed risk assessment form.

Travel Vaccinations

Under the services a GP provides for travel, there is an obligation to give vaccines to provide, free of charge protection against hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus, polio and diphtheria and travel advice. However if there is not enough time before you travel or you require to be seen at specific times or days of the week then you may want to investigate private travel clinics in Sussex.

The Brow Medical Centre are pleased to be able to offer a more specialist service with a greater choice of vaccines you may require, for example rabies, hepatitis B which you would otherwise have to travel to a private travel clinic for. These vaccines are not free on the NHS. Payment can be made by card, cheque or cash.

  • Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
Hepatitis B – £50 per injection – course of 3
Hepatitis B Paediatric – £40 per injection
Meningitis ACWY – £80 per injection for travel
Rabies – £80 per injection – course of 2 or 3
Malaria – £15 per prescription

Further Information

The following websites will give you additional travel advice.

Learning Disabilities Annual Checks

Annual Health Checks are really important because they are a good way to get to know your doctor better, and for them to find out more about you. Your doctor will take a closer look at how you are doing – making sure you are healthy.

An Annual Health Check is done by your doctor once a year. Your doctor will take a closer look at how you are doing – making sure you’re healthy.

  •         They are available for most people aged 14 and older with a learning disability
  •         You don’t need to be ill to get a health check, but you can ask your doctor about anything that is hurting or worrying you
  •         If you are happy, the doctor can do some simple tests to keep you healthy

A local doctor has made this video to show what it is like if you go to the doctor’s surgery for an appointment: How To See Your GP

These health checks allow us to record any adjustments that you might need to help you get the most out of your appointments at the surgery such as having a support worker present, more time in the appointment or a quiet place to wait to see the doctor.

We are keen to ensure you have all the information you need to live a healthy life and are able to provide easy read leaflets where needed.

We also have access to the health facilitators attached to the West Sussex Learning Disability Team should you need any further support to access health care and appointments.

Time To Talk

Time to Talk is an NHS service offering free, confidential talking therapy to adults registered with a GP in West Sussex.

If you’re feeling low, anxious or worried, talking therapies can really help you. Time to Talk can also help people with depression, phobias, social anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorders, health anxiety, low self-esteem or low confidence, relationship difficulties and breavements.

Talking therapies are available in person, on the phone and via video call.

You can self-refer to Time to Talk – you don’t need to speak to your GP first.

If you would rather speak to your GP first, they can refer you with your permission. You can self-refer by phone, or you can complete an online self-referral form. Visit the Time to Talk website to find out more about how to contact them.

Once you’ve self-referred or your GP has referred you, one of the Time to Talk team will be in touch with you for an initial assessment.

More information can be found on the Time to Talk website. There are also useful links to online self-help resources.

  • The Time to Talk service is provided by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.

Chargeable Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges.

Examples chargeable services include the following:

  • Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
  • Insurance claim forms
  • Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
  • Private sick notes
  • Vaccination certificates
  • Please note: The practice does not complete the Medical Proforma in relation to any applications for a firearms/shotgun licence or a renewal of a licence.

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.

First Contact Physio

We now have an experienced physio working in the practice, Georgia, who is the first point of contact for all musculoskeletal problems.

She is more knowledgeable than the GPs in assessing these problems, and has been employed to specifically provide easy access into the specialist musculoskeletal service. She can assess patients, request X-Rays, provide treatment plans and do specialist referrals to consultants in Rheumatology, Orthopaedics and other clinics when needed, including when scans are needed.

  • This speeds up access to specialist services, and frees up GP and nurse appointments for other problems requiring their expertise.

To book an appointment, please speak to reception and ask for the First Contact Physio. Our reception staff may also signpost you to these appointments when this is the most appropriate way of dealing with your musculoskeletal problems.

Alternatively, you can contact the Sussex MSK Partnership for muscular and joint problems. This service includes self-referral as well as self-care for these conditions.
